Our program is based on five R’s:
Rescue, Rehabilitation, Retraining, Rehoming and Retirement.
New Life works with retired thoroughbred racehorses living both on and off the track who are desperately seeking second careers. We are frequently in touch with owners and trainers at racetracks in order to be informed of horses in need. Additionally, we form connections through social media, community outreach, and public awareness to share our mission.
When horses arrive at New Life, they are immediately evaluated as individuals and their physical, mental, and emotional needs are assessed. A plan of action is then created. During this stage, horses are evaluated by a veterinarian. Horses arriving directly from the track are given down time to allow their minds and bodies to relax and heal.
Horses who need to retire live out the rest of their lives in peace and quiet receiving the love they deserve in New Life’s retirement center appropriately named, “Thoroughbred Life Center” or “TLC”.
We have a mission, purpose, and plan to allow these amazing, athletic souls to shine.
Our retraining program at New Life is designed to allow retired thoroughbred racehorses to come into their own in a second career. We aim to promote the athleticism, kind nature, and versatility of the retired thoroughbred through our retraining program. Once horses have reached a certain stage in their retraining, they are available for adoption in order to be rehomed.
Off the track thoroughbreds do not only end up in bad situations coming straight off the track. Too often, people who lack the experience and patience to restart these capable equines end up severely misunderstanding them and, knowingly or unknowingly, send them down the road to undesirable situations. In addition to our retraining program for horses, we also offer programs to assist owners of retired thoroughbred horses to learn how to correctly restart and retrain their off the track thoroughbred.
